Distortion Mirrors tracking day 11 and 12/Studio diary/update - TopicsExpress

Distortion Mirrors tracking day 11 and 12/Studio diary/update Yesterday was a relaxed day here at the studio, filled with pajama lazy couch relaxation passages and enjoying the unseasonable spring sunshine (well now its snowing from top to bottom and bitterly cold again eeghad!) but today was hard hard work. From morning I awoke to my Tyler beckon. He wakes me in my sleeping quarters in the studio and usually (usually) Im pretty friendly, but moreso after my first spot of tea (or a cuppa, as its known back home in the UK). Well I got up and we immediately started work on Oh! Harriett. The track pulled in a few different directions at first but we tried new things and found what stuck was the less is more approach. John figured (wisely) that it needed good bottom end/core to get that Phil Spector wall of sound arrangement/punch that we/I was/were aiming for. We tracked a lovely string arrangement and some white noise static cellos at the tail end which gave it some nice bite. Also some Hammond b3 and some horns. It came out with a polka rhythm which kinda/maybe was/is what we were going for, but its a tribute song to a lovely woman that probably would have dug the old school sound anyway. After that we tackled Its the End of the World (And Im Only Dancing) and pretty much we were firing on all cylinders with that one. The Mellotron found its way into the track and most of the sounds were left field sound bank noises. We used some delicious Mellotron cellos that had the old school Roxy Music feel to them and fit deliciously into the pre-chorus. But that synth! That synth we nestled into the chorus just gives it serious groooooooooove! That synth you might remember from MGMTs Kids (if you pay attention) but it was happy accident and not by design. Pure 80s analog. I took a couch nap on the studio couch as Tyler/Ty Ty and John worked on the snare and bass sounds, making them shine brightly like diamonds in a killer rock and roll sky. However in my semi asleep stage, with the studio cat mascot Miley on my chest, I heard snippets of conversation flicker in an out of my ears like Its MC hammer! Cant touch this! and Don Johnson and Marilyn Manson!. To bridge the connection, Mics bass seemed to play the same well known MC Hammer song (or Hammer as he prefers to be called now. Met him on a airplane once. Nice guy.),the aforementioned Cant Touch This. You can look for it when you hear the song. The Don Johnson and Manson comments are what happens when the studio boys concoct the very first Distortion Mirrors parody (no no Im not talking about our early music, but if you want a laugh there is that too). Anyway, the track came to life and sounds fantastic. Its on course to be the opening song and possibly the first single. Ive been thinking about turning Good Girls go to Heaven into the distorted drum machine/shoegaze/art rock song with a great melody. Thats another experiment John and I will tend to. Johns been wonderful at helping me listen to objectivity. Its a new change from old habits (they die hard, dont they?) but John has got his pulse on shaping songs to be maximum effective. Tyler also has my ear for changes. Except that bell boys! (inside joke). Anyway, your band is warm and toasty in a white wonderland in upstate New York working furiously on their official official debut record. Stay tuned for more updates! Until...-Luke
