District 5340 Governor’s Newsletter “THE TORCH” October, 2013 GOVERNOR’S TORCHBEARER AWARD For Rotary year 2013-14 there is a unique award presented during the District Governor’s official visit to each club—the Governor’s Torchbearer Award. A Torchbearer is an individual who has demonstrated a passion to “light the path of Rotary” through dedication to the Object of Rotary and enthusiasm to use the power of Rotary to “ Engage Rotary and Change Lives.” A Torchbearer is one who imparts knowledge, truth and inspiration to others. Their passion for Rotary is their torch which, when combined with the torches of all Rotary’s Torchbearers, creates an immense glow that brightens the lives of individuals and families in their community and around the world. Sorry about that! ClubRunner! We are live! Sincere congrats to Scott Carr and the ClubRunner transition team for successfully migrating our district website to ClubRunner! As of October 1 the legacy website was discontinued and all district website data is now powered by ClubRunner. Sincere thanks also go to Philippe Lamoise for his stewardship of our former district website over the many years. As this edition of The Torch proves, your governor is now also learning how to navigate through and utilize the vast array of website tools and information sources. And who says you can’t teach an old governor new tricks!!! BE A VIBRANT CLUB Your Club Leadership Plan Strong Rotary clubs foster innovation and flexibility. The “Be a Vibrant Club” brochure (245-EN) is a superb collection of best practices intended to strengthen clubs by motivating members to implement new ideas to increase the vitality of their club. The brochure is in an easy-to-read format with many tips and ideas for club leaders and all club members. For example: • Developing long-range goals that address the elements of an effective club • Using the Planning Guide to set annual goals that align with the club’s long-range goals • Conducting club assemblies that involve all members in the planning process • Ensuring clear communication between club leaders, club members, and district leaders • Providing for continuity in leadership to ensure development of future leaders • Amending club bylaws to reflect current club structure and roles and responsibilities • Providing opportunities to develop stronger relationships among club members • Ensure that EVERY member is active in a club project or function • Developing a comprehensive training plan to foster leadership and service • Assigning committees that support the club’s needs Go to rotary.org for more information and how to access this fantastic publication. DISTRICT CONFERENCE AND FOUNDATION SEMINAR/CELEBRATION Our 2013 District Conference and Foundation Seminar/Celebration is almost here!
