Divergent [ PG-13 ] 2014. Review by Ovie Man. This movie is a blend of Hunger Games: Catching Fire meets I Robot. The character Beatrice, played by Shailene Woodley, known as Tris is more complex than Katniss Everdeen. It is in fact that characteristic which makes her so special. She was born into a family of abnegation (selfless). In her world, once age 16 she must choose her future assignation of five factions. The others are erudite, dauntless, candor and amity. The concept of factions is supposed to promote peace. Kate Winslet plays an erudite administrator who is aware of a sixth group, the divergents, who she feels must be controlled lest chaos ensue. It is through this concern that the movie is likened to I Robot. Woodley and Winslet are very good. Theo James plays Four, a dauntless, and is very good also. His faction you learn has a complex and rigorous initiation. Not to spoil too much, the faction choice of Tris, her brother, past choices of her mother played by Ashley Judd are excluded from this short commentary. This is the review of the best of four movies I am posting today even if it is not the best review. Score 6.5 / 10.0 Ovie Man.
