Divergent Paths: There’s more than one way to get a foot in the door to the world Any university graduate – especially in today’s tight labour market – is all too familiar with the Catch 22 involved in landing that first career gig. You need experience to open doors, but you can’t get experience if no one will give you a chance, said an article in the National Post on October 29, part of a special report on MBAs. It’s a problem that is common for new graduates trying to break in to any field, but for Canadians hoping to work overseas, geography is an extra hurdle to overcome “Working internationally was such a rewarding experience that from day one, I knew it was what I wanted for my career,” says Gareth Bohn, who is currently completing his MBA at the Rotman School of Management. “But it really is a chicken and egg sort of problem to get that first job in international business.” When Mr. Bohn finished his undergraduate work in biology at McGill, he travelled extensively, spending time in Dublin and Hong Kong, among other destinations. A desire to make a career out of international management and make himself a better candidate for an executive role in a multinational corporation led him to pursue both his MBA and work experience overseas. “The best way to demonstrate to hiring managers that you have what it takes to work internationally is to show them that you’ve done so successfully,” Mr. Bohn says. To that end, he opted to participate in an internship program run by India-based IT consultancy Infosys, in partnership with a number of universities including Rotman. The program, which lasted for 10 weeks, gave Mr. Bohn a look into the technology sector, where he hopes to work after finishing his MBA in April 2014, as well as the experience of working in Bangalore. Along the same lines, he plans to spend a term at the National University of Singapore on an exchange program beginning in January.
