Divine American academia, who can write these paragraphs? Genre (that means the category of each text, arlekyn, epic battle stories, etc), the author examines its relation to gender, texts written by women and read by women. Genres are best understood as hypothetical; the process of genre identification is best maintained by genre testing. Replacing both pure description and mere abstraction, genre is explored as hypothesis to emphasize that form is theoretical, as well as descriptive or explanatory. Somewhere between empirical details and metaphysical thematizations lie genric formulations that can assist readers in organizing their responses to the text and in recognising the probable understanding toward which the conventions of the text are directed. Genres and gender identifications result in praxis. If we understand reading to be isomorphic with authoring, it becomes clear that the reader can no longer be regarded as the self-evident recipient of text signification. The critical role of genre and gender is to transform speech about the text into a reconstruction of the text as a condition for the possibility of the texts having an effect in the world. Abstract from the book Genre and Gender in Public discourse by Mary Gerhart.1992.
