Divine Neighbor By Greg Ebie Are you looking out for your neighbors? The National Neighborhood Watch program has effectively helped reduce crime across the nation for the last 30 years. The neighborhood watch is a cooperative effort between local law enforcement and citizens like you and me. By simply looking out for each other, neighbors have helped reduce peoples fears and have reclaimed high-crime areas as safe places to live. It used to be neighbors would naturally watch out for each other. That’s how God set up the nation of Israel. As the people settled into the Promised Land they were to build a community that cared for one another because God had cared for them. “Don’t desecrate the land in which you live. I live here, too — I, God, live in the same neighborhood with the People of Israel.” (Numbers 35:34, The Message) What does it do for you to know God lives in your neighborhood? I’m thankful God is always looking out for me; God sees my coming and my going. Knowing God is there sets me free from fear. Having God in the neighborhood should also affect the way we live day to day. God told Israel not to desecrate the land because He lived there too. Do you have an awareness of God’s presence in your community, at your workplace or school? Or have we confined God to only being at church on Sundays? Are we guilty of forgetting God lives in our neighborhood too? Yes, it is a good idea to watch out for each other, but if we would all learn to watch our own behavior perhaps we would rediscover God’s blessing upon our neighborhoods.
