Division 3 Game Report Anderson Avenue, Stinky Pat. With a finals spot on the line the 3rd placed 3rd tier Navy boys ventured down to the edge of the Stinky Pat to take on the premiership favourites and league leading boys from the Bay. Having surprised the Yellow and Black army with a win to inflict their only loss earlier in the season, our heroes were looking to make it two from two against the Bays which would also cement their rightful place in the 3rd tier playoffs for season 2013/14. With Hutchy returning from an extended Christmas break, Mooka returning to the bump from an almost season long absence and Chooka suiting up for first time with a chance to swing the composite, it was only Smearo that was missing from a full strength Navy side. Given their disappointing Div 4 effort a year prior on Australia Day (losing their only game of the year to the Cards) the boys were looking for an improved effort this time around. Some NSW umpiring superstar called Bourne put on the Red and Grey to officiate, and after delaying the start of proceedings by 10 minutes so he could sample the local hot dogs, our new favourite for the umpire of the year called in the coaches, burped up the end of his hot dog and whispered play ball. Sanga took the pill for the locals and promptly used his veteran repertoire of hooks, slides, floats, forks, spits and sinkers to retire the side in order. This went down a treat with the huge contingent of Black and Gold A graders who were starting to enjoy their afternoon of swilling beers while trying to forget their shock of losing to the Navy Boys A grade counterparts a few weeks prior. Mook then accepted the second new ball from Bourney and trotted out to the centre to reintroduce himself to the hill he calls home. Unfortunately for the champ Australia Day 2014 followed a similar script to Australia day 2013 where the boys simply left their grey matter at home. The first inning saw a combination of 4 hits and a couple of brain fades from the Navy boys to ensure the Bays hit the scoreboard first and ended up 1-0 to the good after 1. Sanga rolled through the second with less difficulty than the first and our heroes ventured out for the 2nd unaware of the crapsh!t that was about to happen. The innings started with a piss weak error by Stato at 1B, which might have been OK except it was followed 2 hitters later by another infield error and then a brain fade missed fly by Twitch ensuring the Tigers used 4 of their nine lives on their way to a 3-0 lead. Sanga spent less time again sending the next 3 Hawks down in order and then sh!t really got untidy. A couple of hits were followed by a muffed fly to right (that fortunately was able to be turned into a force out at second), but in the process the mental damage was done. A flare to right scored another and then 5 straight hits to the Tigers saw the locals post a 7 spot and stroll into the 4th 10-0 to the good. The Hawks finally got something going in the 4th with back to back walks to Miner Cook and N Roebuck followed by a Mocha smash to left which ended both the no hitter and the shutout in one foul swoop. Nolesy then took to the dome for the good guys and proceeded to shut down the next 2 innings while Millhouse called on blow out guy Shanks to take to the hill and give Sanga a rest with the game sorted. Shanks immediately gave our boys a sniff by spraying it all over the place and after a couple of walks, quick hits to Mocha and Watto saw the Navy boys creep to a 4-10 deficit with 2 on and 2 out in the 6th before a fly to left ended the threat. Unfortunately the defensive brain farts continued with another misplayed fly to centre gifting a couple of insurance runs to the boys in Black and Gold and ensured the Australia Day weekend once again ended up being rat sh!t for our Navy boys who went down 13-4. Coincidentally this was also the identical split of safe hits registered by the two teams. So after 15 rounds the 3rd tier boys sit 2 games clear in the top 4 with 3 to play. The equation is relatively simple, 2 wins will guarantee a finals spot with anything less than that requiring other results to fall our way. The consequence of all of this is that this weeks home game against the Senators becomes hugely significant, both to the chances of finals but also to inflict some revenge on a disappointing 11-3 loss to the Woodville boys earlier in the season. If you are around on Saturday, pre game festivities begin at 2.30 with first pitch at 3.
