Djelloul Marbrook THE CONSEQUENCES OF ISRAEL’S LAND-GRABBING —————————————————————————— This will reenforce the Arab fear that Israel is pursuing a vision of Eretz Israel, the restoration of the Davidian Kingdom. That would entail Jordan, parts of Syria and Lebanon, and Sinai. By what logic is this supposed to assure the Arabs that Israel seeks peace? The truth is Israel doesn’t care what the Arabs think because it has no intention of dealing with them in good faith. If it did, it wouldn’t grab more land. Nor does Israel care what the American public thinks, becaue it has AIPAC to threaten politicians with the loss of the Jewish vote. But there is more to consider than this. The West Bank adjoins Jordan. Jordan is already hard put to absorb Palestinians, Syrian and Iraqi refugees. The Israeli action in seizing a thousand acres on the West Bank is a stick poked in Jordan’s eye. It says, You’re next. We say we’re Jordan’s ally. Jordan has good reason to say, Some ally. And what this means is that Israel really doesn’t care what kind of diplomatic binds it puts us in.
