Do You Dance in a Sky Filled With Light? “For me a place to begin healing the souls of those afflicted by war and disease is by creating comfortable and affordable interfaces for their bodies.” - David Sengeh What do you as a physical therapist and a leader in your own right do when confronted with a seemingly intractable issue? Have you considered dancing in a sky filled with light? By this I mean, do you let your mind soar to that place where you feel liberated, protected, comfortable and at peace? Whatever, whoever or wherever that is for you, try going there to look for inspiration. In this short 4 minute TED talk by David Sengeh was born and raised in Sierra Leone, where more than 8,000 men, women and children had limbs amputated during a brutal civil war, Sengeh tells about how he approached a seemingly unsolvable problem. He noticed that many people there opted not to wear a prosthesis because proper fit is such an issue. Sengeh pioneered a new system for creating prosthetic sockets, which fits a prosthesis onto a patients residual limb. Using MRI to map the shape, computer-assisted design to predict internal strains and 3D printing to allow for different materials to be used in different places, Sengeh is creating sockets that are far more comfortable than traditional models. These sockets can be produced cheaply and quickly, making them far more likely to help amputees across the globe. Australia’s Little River Band sang about such a place 40 years ago. “Disability in our age should not prevent anyone from leading meaningful lives.” - David Sengeh From the practice fields… Joe Putos, PT Chair, Leadership Division Canadian Physiotherapy Association
