Do You Know What Apps Your Employees Use? Wall Street Journal (10/27/14) Gage, Deborah One of the major cloud security challenges faced by employers today is employees use of unauthorized cloud apps in the workplace. Skyhigh Networks found in a recent survey of 350 large companies that employees collectively used an average of 831 different cloud apps and services, while the app-tracking service provider Netskope found the average number of cloud apps used within a given organization in the past quarter to be 579. Some companies are taking steps to address this by blocking unsanctioned apps, but Alan Pelz-Sharpe, the research director at 451 Research, says this is increasingly an ineffective way of addressing the problem. General Electric has taken a slightly different approach. Instead of attempting to block any and all unauthorized apps, it instead built software that would allow it to track what apps employees are using. It then examines these apps and creates curated lists of what apps it considers best for employees, as a way of nudging them to use the more secure apps. Cisco Systems has created its own app store sporting apps the company approves of and funnels employees into that store. Cisco says that doing so not only enhances security, but cuts down on licensing and maintenance costs.
