Do You Really Need Fish Oil? Fish oil (really, the omega-3s in them) are very important for a lot of bodily processes. This is very relevant to powerlifters and strength athletes due to its analgesic (painkilling) properties against chronic pain and its ability to reduce muscle soreness. It also has the potential to increase protein synthesis (by augmenting how well leucine, one of the BCAAs, works) as an added bonus. In terms of diet, you want to have roughly an equal ratio of omega-3s to omega-6s. Since we get a ton of omega-6s from red meat and eggs already, unless you eat a lot of fatty fish (like salmon), you are likely not getting enough omega-3s. With that in mind, supplementing with fish oil or cod liver oil is likely the smart thing to do.
