Do You Want Bad Posture?!?! One of the problems of boot camp/group training programs is one of its strengths... a lot of push ups. While one of the best exercises for chest, shoulder and tricep muscles, it doesnt do enough to strengthen the upper back muscles that are antagonists to the muscles in the front of your body. The result is the muscles in the front of your body get very strong without an equal strength gain to the muscles in the back. This pulls your shoulders forward and down which can curve your upper and mid back resulting in bad posture(postural kyphosis). To counteract this, our programs use exercises for the whole back with dumbbells, barbells, pull up assist straps and pull down machines, while working towards being able to do unassisted pull ups. We also spend time stretching the pectoral muscles and using the foam roller to help. Today we did what some consider a postural correction exercise. We call them Cobras. Designed to strengthen and tighten muscles in the mid and upper back, they can help to correct bad posture. Not everyone is affected like this, but we take not of those that are and do what we can to head off or correct a problem. Its little things like this that set us apart from others.
