Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves. James - TopicsExpress

Do not merely listen to the Word, and so deceive yourselves. James 1 : 22a What we hear from the Word. Is not necessarily what we choose to remember or do. And according to this short verse part (a) deception will set in. And the worst kind. Self deception. About 35 years ago a woman i had just met, a wife of a friend, told me that she had heard that i was insensitive. I thought she was completely off base and partially rude and insensitive. I could not shake the thought. It bothered me. A few days later, i decided to ask three guy friends separately this question, Am I insensitive? I asked each of them to take ten seconds before they answered and tell me the Gods honest truth. They all said yes. Which began a journey for me to self discovery and to a full relationship with the Holy Spirit. How could I be that self deceived ? How could I be that blind to such a self destructive behavior ? I was. And it was not the last time. So you may be too. And we need each other. And we need the back half of the verse. James 1: 22b Do what it says. That is DO what the Word of God tells you. Noah did everything the Lord instructed him. Moses did everything the Lord instructed him. Gideon did everything the Lord instructed him. So did Joshua. And the teenager Mary when told she would have a baby out of wedlock. And the father of the Hebrew nation, Abraham when he took his one and only son to the mountain with a flint knife. When Mary learned the wedding in Cana was out of wine, she pulled her chair back and went to the servants of the house, and said something very simple, so simple that it is the key to becoming unfoggy and clear-headed and not self deceived, she said to them, Just do what He tells you to do. And so, we should. All the time. May God be glorified.
