Do not quit. God did not call us to trouble-free marriages. Every Christian and every godly marriage will face trials, trouble and pain. Jesus said “In this world you will have trouble. But take heart; I have overcome the world. John 16:33. The purpose of marriage is not trouble-free living. Marriage is purposed to glorifying God and to exemplify divine oneness, unconditional love and unmerited forgiveness. There is no better place to develop a godly character than in marriage. In marriage every virtue is perfected. Our love is tested, our forgiveness is tried and our endurance is perfected. If our spouses never disappointed us, how would we learn unmerited forgiveness? If our spouses never fail us, how would we learn unconditional love? If our spouses were quick to apologize and change, how would we learn commitment and endurance? Every marriage problem is meant to leave us better citizen of the heavenly home. Quitting accomplishes the exact opposite. Press on! “Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.” 1 Corinthians 13:4-7
