Do something Christmassy- give away a blanket. We’re currently volunteering at Crisis, and soon we will have “guests who will not be coming back”, ie homeless people who will leave the centres and sleep on the streets. They need blankets more than most other people, so if you have any spare blankets or sleeping bags (obviously condition doesn’t really matter), please let me know and I’ll collect them or let you know how to drop them off. I could write a very long post about how fascinating and fulfilling it has been working at Crisis, but suffice it to say that I can’t imagine not doing this again, now I’ve tried it. And the thing it has impressed on me most is that there is really very little difference in principle between homeless people on the streets and anyone else. Yesterday our team served 275 Christmas dinners to some of the most appreciative diners you could find anywhere. It was all done with donated ingredients, borrowed equipment in a borrowed building, staffed entirely by volunteers. During the day there had been showers, hairdressing, sewing, yoga, head massage, entertainment, doctors, opticians, and other facilities, all thanks to people donating their time. It’s extraordinary, but it works. And now we need some bedding. Happy Christmas!
