[Do we really care about our farmers?] Henry Kissinger declared in the 1970’s, Farmers face unique risks unlike those in other professions. Weather and market conditions outside a producer’s control can have a devastating effect on producers. Agriculture is not a profitable business, it can be clearly understood from the fact that the amount of money involved in growing one kg of wheat is more than the cost.To grow wheat we need seeds, fertilizers ,water, electricity ,insecticides and manpower. No wonder so many farmers commit suicide every year due to the failure of crops and loan sharks.Every twelve minutes a farmer in india tries to commit suicide. Its not difficult to understand the importance of farmers and farming sans any figures. We need food to survive and they are the ones who give their lives to serve us.As our late prime minister said “Jai Jawan ,Jai Kisan”,the weight in these words are more than one can imagine. If we don’t have strong farming system and strong defense our very identity is threatened. Gandhiji emphasized the need of swadeshi,he was a visionary. The socio – economic structure, which prevailed prior to the British rule in the country, resulted in the organization of self-sufficient villages. It has been maintaining some kind of static equilibrium. The Indian peasant, though not properly educated, has adequate experience of farming systems and he has been dependent on it for the means of living. In the past two years a lot of changes are happening in agriculture sector around the world. Its clear to everyone that the next wars will be fought over food, also one who controls your food ,controls your country. United states of America introduces the Agriculture, reform ,food and jobs bill in 2012,the bill gives benefits of subsidies to their farmers in order to increase the production of food grains as they predict they may need it in the future. The bill also provides for “food for peace” which provides for US to donate food abroad in case its needed. Its a good bill, any country which foresees its requirements and strategies for the future will implement it for the benefit of ones citizens. Anyhow in the very next year FDI in retail was pushed in India, using CBI and all sorts of other blackmails, the only convincing argument in this was, that retail sector in India needs investment for developing infrastructure. we have nonexistent network of roads ,we don’t have where houses and cold storage and we need investment in that, but like most I too thought that this need can be met by getting the black money stashed abroad back. Now the latest Food security Bill troubles me even more, its nice to hear food for all,but how? Are we going to invest more in farming?NO.Are we going to have an alternative system of distribution, since we know PDS is corrupt to the core? NO. We are just trying to guarantee poor ,uneducated people that we will provide them food by putting the bill on the exchequer and killing our farmers.Maybe in some time we will be able to achieve our complete dependence on “food for Peace” of US,thanks to our small scale farmers like vadera. If the government is going to distribute food grains at Rs2 the total cost of the programme is estimated to be Rs 90,000cr in 2013-2014,the actual cost is expected to be Rs 1,24747cr. That too when the GDP is expected to be 4.8% against last financial year’s 5.2%. One of the way that government will be able to meet this gad is by cutting subsidies.we know the fact that small scale farmers hardly get any subsidies to this day, most of the not so small farmers such as vadra get the benefits. Now with the existing PDS we know most of the food grains will come to the black market, and farmers will have to complete against that in case the government doesn’t buy their produce. And the government suddenly got all the money it needed for infrastructure development, for which last year FDI was a necessity. The FSB provides for the development of where houses and cold storage,to keep the food grains. These people are fooling us and selling us off ,most of us don’t understand and the rest don’t care, they are happy living their lives. They can’t see the future, of maybe think if they earn enough money they will be saved from the aftermath. It seems we have sold of our souls to the Devil himself…….
