Do you apply flea and tick treatments to your pets? Its important - TopicsExpress

Do you apply flea and tick treatments to your pets? Its important to make sure that treatment you are using is safe for your pet, as there are certain treatments that can be VERY harmful to cats. Many of the canine treatments contain a chemical called pyrethrin or pyrethroid. Cats are very sensitive to these chemicals, and if they are exposed to enough of it, it can be fatal. So, read the label closely! Symptoms of pyrethrin toxicity include excessive drooling, vomiting, shaking/tremors, agitation, weakness, difficulty breathing, and even seizures. Pyrethrin poisoning usually requires anti-seizure medications and I.V. fluid therapy, at the very least. If you think your cat may have been exposed to pyrethrin, your cat needs to see a veterinarian QUICKLY. If you cannot get to a veterinarian right away, you want to make sure to wipe off as much of the pyrethrin-based treatment as you can, and then bathe the cat with COOL water and Dawn dish soap (warm water will only allow the pyrethrin to absorb faster). It is important to note that, regardless of the bath, your cat will still need to be treated by a veterinarian. Questions? Give us a call! - Alpine Animal Staff 928-774-9441
