Do you approve sa mga school projects na ang grades ay based sa dami ng likes sa FB???? Hala! Umangal ang parents! School Grades Student Projects by Facebook Likes, Parents Dislike Link: kickerdaily/a-school-grades-student-projects-by-fb-likes-parents-dislikes/ Laguna, Philippines –An unprecedented grading system for school projects was introduced by a secondary school in this province, and consequently drew criticism from skeptical parents. Freshman high school students of Pedro Guevarra Memorial National High School in Sta. Cruz were asked to create short videos about poverty as a school project, upload them on Facebook and solicit as many ‘likes’ as they can. Those who waged the most ‘likes’ will be exempted from their Filipino exam, as posted by one of the students. One will just have to click the thumbs-up icon below the post indicating their approval after watching the flick, and comments are no longer necessary or required from the users. But most of the parents were unconvinced of this new ‘grading system’ and were disappointed with the school for using social media as a means to gauge student’s capability. A mother, Marlene Sarmiento, in her comments insisted that student assessment should be based on academic performance, and not on FB likes. One anonymous user also expressed disbelief and sarcasm over this move. She posted, “What’s with their teachers? Are they going to base it next on text votes?” Soliciting likes in Facebook and other social media had been very common nowadays especially on polls involving beauty contests as a measure of popularity while text votes are employed in reality contests like ‘The Voice’ and ‘Pilipinas Got Talent’ programs on television. Another Facebook user, Rhei Romero, also objected to the system and wrote, “Have the teachers lost their wits in giving fair grades? We don’t even see all the projects submitted by the other students. That’s not very fair.” The other parents likewise raised concern about its possible negative psychological impact on the children. They are worried that once the child gets less ‘likes’ than they expected, he or she may lose self-esteem upon realizing that he/she actually had very few friends. This, according to them, may also expose the youngsters and even fall prey to online strangers. But the school principal, Ms. Janet de Leon, defended the rather unusual grading method. She insisted there’s nothing wrong with the use of Facebook or other social networking site for school activities. She also clarified that it was only for one activity and final grades were not calculated from it alone.
