Do you ever wonder about how a book is prepared for publication by a major New York house? I can tell you some of it. Once the manuscript has been accepted, it goes to the copy editor who goes over it thoroughly for spelling, punctuation, consistency of capitalization, and to catch any problems in chronology, mistakes regarding descriptions, dropped words, or phrases or sentences that might not make sense. Then the corrected manuscript comes back to the author who goes over every single mark on it left by the copy editor, accepting or rejecting, and often catching mistakes in continuity that nobody but the author herself can catch, and adding clarifications here and there and even new sentences of paragraphs. The author can also delete words, phrases and the like. Next stage, the book is typeset in what is called the galleys. Once again, it is scrupulously read for errors and sent to the author who once again reads every word to seek out mistakes missed in the past. Once again, the author can delete, rewrite, add, refine, expand. After that comes the page proof stage, and again, at the house there is scrupulous proof reading. The author may get any number of queries all along the way about what seem lapses, or contradictions, etc. Then finally you get the printed book. And guess what? Mistakes, typos, misspellings...still somehow get through. But thats the process, and it usually takes 9 months to a year.
