Do you have things in your life that give you purpose, meaning, significance? What is it you are pursuing to validate your existence? is it your career? your family? Money? Success? Pleasure and comfort and Ease? Your own fame and personal legacy? (my personal struggle) Your spirituality? Entertainment? These things are not bad altogether, but when good things become ultimate things, they are idolatry. They are the same as building a god of wood, stone or metal and worshipping them. They are simply socially acceptable idols. If we read 1 Samuel 4-6, we see that God does not cooperate or play very nicely with idols, even those mentioned previously. This is the story of the Phillistines trying to place the ark of the Covenant next to their god Dagon so they can worship them together. Read to see what happens.
