Do you know how many prefectures in Japan? The most popular destinations of foreign visitors are 1st Tokyo, 2nd Osaka, 3rd Kyoto always these cities are top 3. How many of you know other cities or regions of Japan? Japan consists of 47 prefectures. There are 8 regions from north to south Hokkaido, Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Kinki/Kansai, Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu include Okinawa. Japan is almost the same size of California little bit smaller though, divided 47 prefectures. People in Each prefecture speak in slightly different dialect or have accent. Each maintain their own culture. Favorite foods are different. You may find more interesting face of Japan travel outside of mega-metropolitan city of Tokyo. Id like to introduce you each region here. First stop is Hokkaido Hokkaido is the second largest northernmost island. Winter weather is very severe they have a lot of snowfall below zero temperatures. They have no rainy season low humidity summer makes you feel pleasant compare to the rest of regions of Japan. The largest city is Sapporo the capital city of Hokkaido as well. Their population is nearly 2 million but back in 1857 the citys population was only 7 people. Hokkaido used to be called Ezo, the Ainu territory. After Meiji period Japanese Government started development of Hokkaido on a large scale, Sapporo was chosen as the islands administrative center. In addition to that Sapporo became world famous in 1972 when the Olympic Winter Games were held. Also Sapporo Snow Festival has grown bigger and bigger every year. Hokkaido still has a lot of underpopulated area. Many national parks and scenic sights attract tourists make Hokkaido one of the most popular travel destinations in Japan. Other popular tourist spots Otaru:Harbor city near Sapporo with a canal. Niseko:famous skii resort. Noboribetsu:most famous hot spring resort in Hokkaido. Lake Toya:Site of Mr. Usu an active volcano. Furano:town with beautiful lavender and flower fields. Hakodate:2nd largest southernmost city on Hokkaido. Asahikawa:city located in central Hokkaido famous for its zoo. Abashiri:known for its historical prison and drift ice in the sea during winter. Lake Akan:beautiful crater lake famous for marimo. Kushiro Marshlands:observed Japanese cranes.
