Do you know the SALARY and RETIREMENT BENEFITS of our Netas – Member of Parliament (MP)? This is one profession where there is no retirement age; one can serve in his 70s, 80s and even 90s. Similarly, no minimum service tenure is required to get pension; one can get pension if he is a Member of Parliament for just one year. There is no age limit, even a 30 year old MP is eligible for pension. This is the beauty of the profession of a politician! Through this article, I will write about the Salary and retirement benefits of our Netas – parliamentarians. (I have not gone deeper into the terms of payment, the broad package is narrated here) Salary and other amenities provided to a Member of Parliament (MP) are governed by Member of Parliament Act, 1954. Based on Salary, Allowances and Pension of Members of Parliament (Amendment) Act, 2010, the MPs are eligible for the following amenities. Basic Salary - Rs.50,000/- per month (Fully Taxable) Daily Allowance Rs.2,000 per day For each day of session held at Parliament including 3 days prior and 3 days after the session. The holidays coming in between the session is also counted for daily allowance. MP has to sign a register maintained at the Secretariat at Parliament to claim this allowance. Constituency Allowance - Rs.45,000 per month Office Expense Allowance Rs.15,000 per month towards stationery and postage Rs.30,000 per month towards the salary of one personal secretary Travelling Allowance Forward and Return Journey – for attending Parliament session or meeting of a Parliamentary committee or for the purpose of attending any other business connected with his duties By rail – 1 free First Class AC + 1 second class fare/ticket By Air – 1 and 1/4th air fare of the airlines in which he travels By Road – Rs.16 per km Air travel facility 34 single air journeys (eligible for 34 tickets) Can be used by the spouse 8 times alone! The unused journeys can be carried over to the next year If excess tickets are consumed, can be adjusted from the next year! Rail Travel facility First class a/c – anytime anywhere – totally free for MP and his assistant Spouse can travel Free for 8 times in a year Accommodation Free accommodation (flat or hostel) at Delhi during the entire term Free Water up to 4000 kl per annum Free electricity up to 50000 units per annum Other Perquisites For maintenance of sofa cover, curtains, furniture etc. an allowance Rs.60,000 per quarter Free Telephone and Mobile phone – entitled to 3 telephones and 1 mobile phone. He can make 150000 local calls per year free. Broadband – up to Rs.1500 free per month Medical Facilities Free medical facilities provided MP contributes Rs.500 per month to a fund Advance for purchase of conveyance Rs.400000 towards purchase of a vehicle can be taken as Loan/advance, repayable on 60 monthly installments Pension – The benefits available post retirement (or tenure) Rs.20,000 per month Rs.1,500 per month for every MP who has served over 5 years for every year in excess of 5 years Rail Travel Facility and Medical facility are also available post retirement!!! Family Pension for the spouse after the death The spouse or dependent of a deceased Member/Ex-Member is entitled for the remaining period of her/his life to receive family pension equal to 50% of the pension otherwise admissible to the deceased Member/Ex-Member at the time of his death
