Do you know the origin of the myth that eating carrots help you see better at night? While carrots are high in beta-carotene that converts to vitamin A, a nutrient essential for maintaining healthy vision, this particular myth most likely originated during the Blitz in WWII, when Britain developed radar that helped pinpoint the exact location of enemy planes at night. To keep this technology under wraps, the government released documents stating that RAF pilots were able to see in the dark because they ate lots of carrots. (This, of course, had the added benefit that it encouraged citizens to grow carrots at a time when many foods were rationed.)
