Do you know where you are donating ? Usually after Christmas - TopicsExpress

Do you know where you are donating ? Usually after Christmas and before spring, we purge our dressers and closets, and off to the donation bins we go. Did you know that not all those donation bins you see set up in parking lots are not all non profit ventures . While we shop local , I believe we should donate local. Some of these donation bins and dealers will take your still wearable clothes and sell them as rags . Often these rag dealers will sell overseas . What could be given a second life and help a local non profit ends up only filling the wallet of less reputable people . Locally in Cambridge we have St. Vincent De Paul,Recovery Room Shop,Redemption Ministries Thrift, Value Village and Uptown Thrift. All of the above mentioned do have physical locations in town. You have the right to ask where the money goes . You also have the right to ask what administrative costs are . If the answers do not sit well with you, go to your next choice. If you are unsure of any donation bins out there, check for a phone number on the box . If you are in close proximity to a second hand store, drop of the donations,or call. Some offer pick up services . There is much need in our area for donations due to government cutbacks . Shop local. Donate local. * Goodwill Industries does have a donation centre in Cambridge. Presently donations received there go to Kitchener. I have been told Goodwill continues to seek a suitable location in Cambridge . *Cambridge Self Help Food Bank also has a clothing room but unfortunately they lack storage space. Call ahead to see if they are accepting donations .
