Do you know where your $ is going when you donate to cancer? Feel - TopicsExpress

Do you know where your $ is going when you donate to cancer? Feel free to share this Hey Friends. As you have probably heard our walk4acure that my sisters and have created is coming up this Sunday. I wanted to take the time to write a personal message regarding this walk. I would like to thank you all for in some way or another being a support to my sisters over the years. Many of you have supported as we lived with a sick mother, grieved her loss, through prayer, friendship, walking with us, or sponsoring. All are greatly appreciated. We realize that because of our personal connection with cancer it makes it easy for us to draw people to this cause. A huge problem with cancer fundraising is that plays on peoples vulnerability, emotions and experience to raise billions of dollars without people knowing where the money is going. People buy pink products, wear livestrong braclets, raise and donate thousands of dollars each year because they trust it is going "to a good cause." “Pink” products and the Pink ribbon have become a fad. Breast cancer has been made to look pretty from pink ribbons, pink products and pink mobs of women walking for a cure. Nothing about breast cancer is pretty. It is an awful disease that people are profiting on. Losing our mother to cancer has inspired our fundraising efforts and created a team of support behind us. We want you to know we have created our walk to get away from using money people donate for anything but strictly cancer research. We realize that due to our tragic family story we have an overwhelming amount of support and do not want to take advantage of that. We started our own walk to ensure that every penny donated to us goes to cancer research. We are taking back the cancer ribbons! And all the expenses that goes along with them! Since our mother passed away we started raising money for large cancer organizations. However, after some research we realized that these big events that make even bigger money have huge costs that are taking away from the important part – finding a cure through research. We wanted to be different and make a difference so last year we decided to create a walk specifically for cancer research – and so Walk 4 A Cure was formed. We wanted to know exactly how the money we raised was going to be used, so we contacted a number of organizations, asked some questions and looked at financial records. In the end we decided to partner with the Cancer Research Society (CRS) because they promised that all of our money would be put into a separate fund and we could then direct the funds to a research project of our choosing. CRS challenged us to raise $60,000 in four years which is a lot of money for 4 women to raise! But if we can do it, CRS will match our money and we will be able to fund an entire research project, name it, and receive reports on its findings. The part we look most forward to is being able to tell all our supporters where their hard earned, generously given money is going. We named our holding fund Isaiah 40:31 because it was our mother’s favourite verse and one that many people have found comfort in. “those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint.” This fund currently holds our funds from 2012 - $16,421, as well as this year’s monies of approximately $5,700. Our goal is to raise another $9,300 by September 29. We are looking for sponsors who believe in what we believe in – putting as much money as possible to finding a cure. We do not have the WIIFM (What’s In It For Me) attitude. We volunteer our time, don’t receive prizes for reaching fundraising milestones, and we don’t buy matching t-shirts. It’s all about the people dealing with the disease and finding a cure for them and those in the future. It is too late for our mother to be healed but we are is still hope for others.
