Do you remember football? Do you remember your muscles burning the first day of practice? Do you remember the August heat baking summer rain from the ground thickening the air until it catches like an earthy sob in your chest? Do you remember the sick feeling in the pit of your stomach telling you if you run one more suicide you’re going to vomit all over your cleats? Do you remember finding the will to do it anyway? Do you remember the first time you put all your gear on and made game faces in the bathroom mirror? Do you remember the first day of contact when everyone gets so hyped it’s as if they are speaking in tongues during Oklahomas? Do you remember being so hot under your pads that the 2mph breeze of hair dryer hot air at the end of practice was like standing in the dairy case at Publix? Do you remember visualizing the plays you’ll make the night before the game? Do you remember the butterflies before you take or make that first big hit… then calm that follows after the play like the eye of a storm whose fury is unleashed at the next snap of the ball? Do you remember the cacophony of cheers that follow the first rush, first completion, first touchdown, first win? Do you remember the sting of silence after the first fumble, first INT, first loss? Do you remember loving a teammate but hating their performance? Do you remember hating a teammate but finding a way through it together? Do you remember loving a team and doing your best but failing them anyway? Do you remember finding a way to be better than your best the next week? Do you remember the pain after gameday and how much it hurt just to lift your leg in the tub? Do you remember how every second of it was worth it? Do you remember football?
