Do you remember the Wissing house in the 500 block of North Fourth - TopicsExpress

Do you remember the Wissing house in the 500 block of North Fourth Street, where Bunny and Doug grew up? Their father distributed the Courier Journal in Vincennes. There was a large pear tree in the side yard that I could sit in all day and eat the best pears! The entire block and the 400 block between 4th and 5th streets was once the property of Bishop Hailandiere who had a residence there. Most of the property was sold off and St Rose Academy was built on part of it. This is when Seminary Street was built across the property. Remnants of the old orchard survived in several neighborhood yards and the St Rose grounds. I was also partial to a persimmon tree on the old grounds. Later, this building and some neighboring homes, like the Wissing home would be demolished to make room for the new St Rose. Do you know that Douglass Wissing wrote a wonderful article in Traces Magazines 20th anniversary edition? It was called, VINCENNES FRICASSEE. It includes the recipe. I think it tastes just the way I remember it. If you dont have an old-fashioned food grinder, I dont think you can do it. It is rather a large recipe, so you may want to plan to invite your friends over (keep me in mind!). The Indiana Historical Society has extra copies of the magazine. Call 800 447-1830. It is the Spring, 2009 edition.
