Do you suffer from lower back pain? Many of our clients have desk jobs in which they are seated for prolonged periods of the day and as a nation have an extremely common imbalance issue and many people may suffer from lower back pain, in which a major contributable factor has been shown to be the seated position we undertake causing misalignment of the pelvis. The majority of professions have you sitting down for hours upon hours with no rest bite, the classic seated position restricts the full muscle length of the hip flexors (Psoas minor, major and Illiacus) causing the muscles to become tight overtime and essentially pull the pelvis forward (Anterior tilt). The seated position also causes the gluteus and hamstring muscles to become weak and inactive, further contributing to the excessive anterior tilt of the pelvis both contributing to lower back pain during sitting, standing, walking, running etc. due to Lordosis (arching) of the lumbar spine causing the force produced during standing, walking and running to be inefficiently dissipated through the lumbar spine into the lower back muscles (Erector Spinae) causing lower back pain. So during work try and have a walk around as often as possible to re-lengthen those hip flexors and engage your gluteus to counteract this negative effect on the body (Also walking within the workplace has been shown to improve productivity, job satisfaction and general health). Also to assist in the correction of this, hip flexor stretches and posterior chain activation exercises should be incorporated into your workout, our personal trainers will ensure during sessions and relevant exercises that correct lumbar spine and pelvic tilt are undertaken which ensures correct mechanics during movements. If you need any further advice on specific stretches and exercises to help reduce lower back pain dont hesitate to ask one of our lovely personal trainers around the shop floor.
