Do you think of your dog like a child? A brain imaging study conducted by Mass General researchers indicates that you’re not alone. Many of the same areas of the brain that are activated when mothers look at photos of their dogs are also activated when they look at photos of their children. However, there are some meaningful and unique differences. The results of this study could provide new insights into the mental processes behind recognition and bonding. Dr. Lori Palley of the Center for Comparative Medicine was lead author of the study in collaboration with investigators in the Department of Psychiatry.
