“Do you think that the people up here believe in God?” Randy - TopicsExpress

“Do you think that the people up here believe in God?” Randy asked as I followed his gaze to the canopy of bright stars sparkling around us. “Sometimes it seems like they do, but then again sometimes it seems that they’re on a different wavelength” I answered. “It’s as if they have a faith, but they have put a different spin on it all in order to survive in their own culture and stay close to God on a daily basis. It’s funny that you even brought it up, because the other day in the canoe I asked Oki about the same thing.” “What did he say?” “You know him. He’s complicated. He said something like, ‘I do not know. You define God for me, Leo Nard and I will tell you if I accept what you say or not’.” “So he really didn’t see the validity of the question then,” Randy noted. “He couldn’t say ‘yes’ and he couldn’t say ‘no’ until you told him what your God looked like, very clever.” Oki said, ‘Thousands of years of existence, Leo Nard and no proof that the soul goes anywhere when the body is gone; thousands of years of existence and no proof that it does not. Pick one, boy. Each is equally impossible to defend.’” Like a lot of people, questioning my traditional beliefs left me feeling uncomfortable and unsure. Better not to look too deep. AUTHORS’ NOTE—Discussion on religious belief run throughout the novel GO WITH. Much of it is intended to challenge traditional thought. It is not the teacher’s job to keep you on the path, at some point in our lives it is his job to try and knock you off.
