Do you tweet? Join the twitter campaign to call for the UN Human Rights Council to #StepUp4Sudan. Starting today until Saturday! See below for more details: #StepUp4Sudan: Twitter Campaign September 2013 The UN Human Rights Council is set to discuss the human rights situation in Sudan as part of its 24th session being held in Geneva, 9-27th September 2013. Civil society organisations are campaigning to ensure that there is a strong response to the serious and widespread violations of international human rights and humanitarian law happening in Sudan. **What is happening in Sudan?** In Southern Kordofan and Blue Nile, the evidence indicates that the Government of Sudan forces have carried out indiscriminate aerial bombardment and shelling in civilian areas in grave violation of international humanitarian law. Civilian populations are denied desperately needed humanitarian assistance as the Government continues to obstruct humanitarian access to areas controlled by armed opposition groups. In Darfur, ongoing conflict displaced over 300,000 people in the first five months of 2013 alone. Fighting between predominantly ethnic Arab groups surged causing death, injuries, and more displacement. Throughout the country, the Government of Sudan has increased restrictions on freedoms of expression, association and assembly in what appears to be a concerted effort to shut down independent dialogue. There has also been a documented rise in restrictions on religious freedoms targeting Christian minorities. For more information, please see the letter from 20 NGOs sent to members and observers of the UN Human Rights Council this week: bit.ly/17L3BGv **What can I do?** The African Centre for Justice and Peace Studies, Amnesty International, East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Network and International Refugee Rights Initiative are asking our members and supporters to tweet and encourage states represented at the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva to take action and impress upon them the importance of addressing the deteriorating human rights situation in Sudan and to call for the Human Rights Council to adopt a stronger resolution on Sudan. Below is a list of the twitter handles of delegations and diplomats in Geneva that are active on Twitter. **When should I do it?** To maximize the impact of this campaign, we are asking people to send their tweets on Thursday 12th – Saturday 14th September 2013. **What should I say?** Here are a few example tweets that you can try when tweeting at the delegations in Geneva (feel free to replace @usmissiongeneva with the handle of your own country’s delegation or others). Please remember to be polite, include the short weblink to the letter (bit.ly/17L3BGv) for more info, and don’t forget to let us know if you get a response!
