Do you use weight machines? Please dont. I should qualify--when I say dont use weight machines, Im talking about the ones that are fixed position. These include machines like the hamstring curl, chest press, leg extension, or bicep curl. Cable machines are OK to use, but stay away from the rest. Fixed weight machines lock you into a pattern of movement that isnt necessarily healthy for your joints. This can cause excessive stress and lead to injury. The fixed path also limits range of motion--this inhibits performance, results, and can also lead to poor flexibility. When you use a fixed machine, the machine stabilizes the weight for you. This reduces the intensity of the exercise, diminishing many of the health benefits to resistance training. Furthermore, your smaller, stabilizing muscles dont get worked out. These muscles are critical for performance and injury prevention. If you are an advanced bodybuilder doing a lot of free weight training, there can be benefits to using fixed machines. The orthopedic risks, however, are still very present. For those of us who are not advanced bodybuilders, stick to free weights and cable machines. Youll see better results and your body will be healthier.
