Do you want a short s tory for your children through which many aspects of Carnatic music is unfolded? I am giving here a sample. If you like it, tell me! Sangita Mahatmyam I had just finished my evening Anusthanams: Sandhyavandanam and Samitadanam the rituals prescribed by Vedic life for Brahmacharis. I thought it would be a great fun if I went to the terrace and gazed at the beautiful evening sky with stars slowly emerging at different places in the sky as the Sun sets. Our village was not electrified in those days. Hence, all around it would be dark when the Sun goes down the horizon. As darkness envelops, we could watch stars in all its resplendent beauty. As the setting Sun went down, the stars became brighter and new ones appeared all around. I thought if I went down my father would insist that I recite Sahasranamam or some slokas until mother called us for the evening meal. So, I was not in a mood to go down. I continued to enjoy the marvel of gazing the stars. There was a sudden bright light. I could not look at it, as it was too bright. I was around 12 years at that time and as you would expect, I was frightened. Slowly the brightness turned soft and a Goddess like figure emerged and descended on my terrace from the sky. She was lustrous and luminous. I have never seen before such a divine figure. All my fears vanished on seeing her. My immediate reaction was to prostrate and get her blessings. She started caressing and cuddling me, as an affectionate mother would do. I enquired who she was. She said, “I am the Omkara, the celestial Nada of Veda Chants, the celestial divine sangitam. You know Veda Chants are to guide humanity along the path of decency, virtue, morality, honesty, uprightness and ultimate happiness since the time Universe came into existence.”
