Do you wear high heels? Suffering from foot pain? Research has demonstrated that the fit of the shoe is important for preventing pain in the feet. Patients often report pain in the feet and other areas of the body associated with wearing high heels. High heeled shoes are typically designed for look, not for structural support or function. High heels push the weight distribution forward onto the balls of the feet; decrease the stability of the foot that comes from the bones fitting tightly together; shift the center of gravity; and change the alignment of the skeleton and muscle lengths throughout the body, especially the legs and low back. If you must wear heels, pick lower heels (less than 2") and shoes with a wide, cushioned toe box and the best fit and support possible. Consider wearing flats to and from work and events and wait until you get there to put on your heels. You can also give your feet a break by wearing your flats at your desk and keeping your heels handy to wear to meetings. Make sure that all of your shoes fit well and provide cushioning and support for your arches. Reward your feet with a massage at the end of the day. If problems persist, make an appointment with a physical therapist for a complete evaluation and individualized treatment plan. Source: apta.org
