The battle to know if GMOs are in your food could soon be lost if Congress passes the DARK Act. We need to stop this bill in its tracks. Dubbed the “Deny Americans the Right-to-Know or DARK Act by its critics, H.R. 4432 was introduced by Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-Kan.) and is backed by Monsanto, Dow Chemical, the Koch Brothers and junk food companies like Pepsi. If passed, the bill would prohibit states from passing their own GMO labeling laws. Speak up now! Tell Congress to drop this bill and support our fundamental right to know what we’re eating! In total, corporations such as Monsanto, DuPont, Dow, Pepsi, Coke and Kraft have spent more than $100 million to fight recent GMO labeling initiatives in California, Washington, Oregon and Colorado. Despite the millions in corporate cash spent to buy these elections, momentum for labeling has been building across the country. Since 2012, more than 70 GMO labeling bills and ballot initiatives were introduced in 30 states, and labeling laws passed in Connecticut, Maine and Vermont. We and Friends of the Earth Action (our 501(c)4 sister organization) have been at the center of the recent Oregon labeling campaign. We conducted door-to-door outreach to nearly 68,000 voters. After the most expensive ballot measure campaign and closest election in Oregon history, and after massive spending by large chemical and food companies, the labeling initiative was defeated by a mere 812 votes. The fact that this vote was so incredibly close, despite the title wave of corporate cash flooding the state, is a testament to the power of this movement and how close we are to turning the tide. Our growing movement can’t be stopped. Across the country more and more people are waking up to the broken food system, and with your voice, we’ll make sure the chemical and junk food companies can’t continue to keep us in the dark about what we’re feeding our families. Please join us in telling Congress to reject the DARK Act (HR 4432)! History shows that voluntary labeling will not work. In the 13 years since the FDA suggested this approach, not a single company has ever voluntarily labeled its products as GMO. “Voluntary labeling” is a ploy to continue to keep consumers in the dark. Polls show that more than 90% of Americans support labeling GMOs. Despite Big Food’s efforts to buy elections and deceive consumers, the movement for our right to know what we are feeding our families will only continue to grow.
