Doctors Without Borders (MSF)-is a nonprofit organization formed in the early 1970s by two groups of French doctors, one in Africa, the other in Bangladesh Both groups were angry at the politics involved in international aid and decided to form a new aid agency together. . . MSF began on the principled that it is a basic human right for people to have access to medical help, that a country’s borders should not restrict who receives care, and furthermore, that as an independent agency, MSF would not accept any government funds. . . Despite the slow start, MSF is now often the first to provide assistance for many people in trouble, including refugees, victims of war, natural disasters, famines or epidemics. The organization has grown to include volunteers from many countries and now uses a variety of trades people, from carpenters to electricians. . . The structure of the organization means MSF can be ready to send a team anywhere in the world within hours. They have a variety of pre-packaged medical kits in standby depending on the situation. Because of MSF’s rapid response, medical teams can be placed in an emergency area quickly, saving many lives in the process. . . The work of MSF was internationally recognized in 1999 when the group was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize.
