Doctors and nurses who cant speak English to patients face being struck off under new regulations 1. Doctors and nurses face being struck off or disciplined if they cannot speak clearly in English, under new regulations announced today. 2.The professionals - alongside other health care practitioners - can also be disciplined if their language skills arent up to scratch according to the rules, published in a new draft bill by the Law Commission. 3. Organisations including the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and the General Medical Council (GMC) are currently bound by different rules on what they can do. 4. But the new bill will unite the nine bodies currently covering healthcare, allowing them to work from the same legislative framework. 5.The powers would also allow regulators to proactively investigate instances of suspected poor conduct and practice whenever they come to their attention. whereas currently some can only investigate once they have received a formal complaint. For the first time the sanctions regulators can impose will be extended and they will be able to discipline or strike off professionals who are not able to communicate clearly in English.
