Doctors told Jacob’s parents that their autistic child would probably never know how to tie his shoes or even talk. He was diagnosed with moderate to sever autism at the age of 2 and spent years in the special education system where the teachers would try and dissuade his parents from hoping to teach him more than the most basic of skills. Jacob struggled with that sort of instruction and withdrew deeper into himself and even stopped speaking. As a parent going against the professionals is terrifying but she realized if he stayed in special education, he would slip away. His mom removed him from the classes and started to teach him herself at home. She said the key for Jacob was to allow him to study the world with wide-eyed wonder instead of focusing on a list of things he couldn’t do. When he was removed from therapy he started doing spectacular things on his own. Jacob thrived under his mom’s personal attention. She let him explore and study things he wanted and at the same time made sure he enjoyed normal childhood pleasures such as softball, picnics and friends. His mom operated under a concept called “muchness.” Which is surrounding the child with the things they love whether its history, math, music, art…whatever they are drawn to. By the time he was 11 he was ready for college. He’s now studying condensed matter physics at the Indiana University-Purdue University in Indianapolis. His IQ rounds out to 170, higher than that of Einstein. The professors have stated he will in time be in line for a Nobel Prize.
