Doctrine should only be permitted to the extent that its tenets derive wholly and only from Gods word. Any doctrine that extends the word must be challenged. Consistently as a teacher I had to deal with scriptures that discredited doctrinal tenets Id come to accept as true and infallible. Some Sundays Id observe my students and wonder if they could stomach another one. I had by the grace of God willed to never accept anything Gods word didnt sanction. So here is something we had to deal with 3 years ago. Something many of us would rather not discuss. So we had this back and forth last week on tongues and grace and the foundations of Christianity in relation to the old testament. So this morning I get a text simply reading: Acts 19: 1 - 7. I read the portions Id been referred to and then responded: Olu, tongues are a gift. Not a level of growth. As a gift, the giver gives as he wills. To teach as some do that the saved must speak means that there is no giver of the unction -flowing from the will of the giver. They perceive tongues as a fruit of the spirit. To similarly say or expect that every time one is filled there must be an initial physical evidence of tongues as happened in the bible is again to say that the giver of the gift, cannot choose to fill a believer in any way He chooses but only in the way WE expect - tongues. The spirit of the Lord is animate, having a will. He is not a force. He is! Then came this response: I agree with you. 1 Corinthians 1:4-8, 1 Corinthians 12:1-11, 27-31. We should talk more about this later. For those who make Christian life miserable for those who cannot speak, the scriptures ask you again in 1 Corinthians 12:30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? Our salvation is complete when we believe that Jesus died for us. There are many teachings, whatever you believe, remember that youre responsible for the choices you make. The bible is our guide. If anything confuses you, search out the scriptures for yourself. We must never fear to challenge any view no matter the authority by which it proceeds. Gods word is sure and true.
