Does Democracy work as it should? BTW I started writing this post before I read of the events that unfolded in Egypt on Friday. As an alternative to fascism in all its forms, none could deny it is a better choice; however does it deliver better outcomes when economic matters are at play or when global issues such as carbon emissions and greenhouse gas effects are concerned, or even employment and health? I don’t believe it’s the case, at least not as one would expect. There are examples of democracy run amok. I consider the State of California with its initiatives, mandatory and optional referendums that have made it all but impossible at times for the elected government to manage the budget and it created a climate of economic uncertainty. I’m not saying that all changes brought about by these things were bad but rather that it is the role of government and the people who were elected to deal with the matters groups and organizations have taken on in their place. Democracy ought to be sufficiently served by basic, simple and fair electoral process; perhaps some form of recall and or impeachment ought to be sufficient to ensure better democracy. Another example that comes to mind is the hastily adopted €uro as common currency. I don’t fault the concept but rather the implementation without the people realizing or understanding that there were no mechanism to deal with the crisis that we have seen in the past six years. I don’t think the populations understood the effects and implications some member countries would have on the whole if bad and poor economic management was not in place or worse if policies of some countries were detrimental to the group. The U.K. certainly understood and wisely opted out under the circumstances. If you came across the numerous YouTube posts and the occasional foreign network broadcast that show interviewed Americans, Brits, French and so on, answering basic questions about their country’s political or economic major topics, you’d soon conclude these people’s votes can’t possibly contribute something useful or deliver an ideal candidate to power. I’d be tempted to say some people are best being ruled as subjects; that would not be democratic minded of me to repeat, but I do strongly believe in the rights for representation for everyone, even the stupid people. Yes many are well represented there. I have strong reservations about the WTO when it comes to democracy; it’s a body which has one stated mission, perhaps a very big business real mission IMHO, and I’ve already written and posted the serious weaknesses of its free riding effects. It was a coincidence that I picked this topic in light of what happened in Egypt but that brings up something more interesting I’ll address once I’ve read more about the events and aftermath. #TheBigQuestions
