Does Waterless Really Work? Can you really wash a dirty car with a waterless product and end up with a scratch free finish? This is a debate that has been going on ever since Dry Wash n Guard launched their product back in the mid 1990s. Although some may continue to argue, its a fact that the waterless phenomenon its an amazing car care cleaning solution that is not only here to stay, but in many cases has become the first choice for many professional detailers in the industry. People from all over the world are using waterless exclusively. No one is trying to say that waterless car care is replacing the traditional bucket and sponge car cleaning methods however, in some US States, Counties and Cities its a mater of not having the choice. Some places have completely made it illegal to wash or detail cars unless you have some sort of water-smart or water containment system. This is especially important for the Mobile Detailer Ive been detailing all my life and started pushing and training the waterless car care cleaning systems as far back as 2002 in my training programs. I have had nothing but success in my career using the waterless products and have gained a reputation as one of the leaders in waterless car care usage and education. Back then there we only a couple of waterless products available on the market with the first being Dry Wash n Guard which was and still is a global leader in the waterless product category. Back in 2003 Paul Weidler and I had a chemist do some cross engineering, testing and creating of some waterless products based on our experiences using liquid sprays, quick detail sprays and quick spray waxes. Paul and I launched our first waterless product to the market in 2004 with some initial success. But nonetheless still faced the dilemma of having so many people saying this waterless method of car care is going to scratch the painted surface. Were no longer hearing that as much as we used too and have quite the army of waterless detailers with a lot of success. The sales of waterless products have sky rocketed over the past 6 years both on the professional side as well as now having an ever increasing and growing retail market for the DIY and Weekend Warriors cleaning their own cars using waterless technology. What makes a great waterless product? There are two main factors in the proper use of waterless products and the overall success of using waterless products. First, the waterless product itself having the right chemistry and ingredients. There is more to a waterless product then the color, scent, marketing and the labels. Waterless products are very complicated in the manufacturing procedures. Im not going to go into the chemistry other then to let you know that the main ingredient that truly makes the product work as we expect it too is called an Emulsifier This is one of the keys to a successful waterless product and a scratch free finish when using it. Ive been testing and using waterless now since Dry Wash introduced me to their product back in the mid 1990s. Since then, Ive learned so much about how, why and when waterless works. The waterless product itself however is not the complete solution and includes a second procedure and product in order to ensure your not going to scratch the painted surface. This would be the use of the right Micro Fiber Towel both the right choice in a waterless product and the micro fiber towel are the perfect combination. Micro Fiber fabrics arrived here in the US from overseas back in the early 2000s and the MF towel has become a major part of the professional detailers arsenal. Micro Fiber, when used correctly with the right waterless product, lifts the debris from the paint or any surface and stuffs it up into the towel which allows only the safe fabric to come into contact with the painted surface. Unlike many cotton, wool,l sponge or other blended fabrics micro fiber does not spread, transfer or push the dirt and debris around. Micro fiber lifts the debris similar to how a vacuum cleaner works on carpet. There is yet one more factor in the proper use of waterless car cleaning and micro fiber towels and that would be the Technique being used. The waterless cleaning techniques used is one very important factor and a huge contribution to a scratch free surface. Using in-correct techniques can and in most cases can create new paint defects. Learning these techniques are very important and play a major role in the time it takes to get a car completed as well as the end results and finished product you are offering. My disclaimer is that Im not here to push waterless car care onto anyone and this may or may not be the car care cleaning solution for you or your business model. However, waterless car care is yet another alternative and a great way to offer an amazing marketing plan of being eco friendly and green in your community. Today, most people are willing to pay Up Too 30% more for a green product or service! that is a huge number to take advantage of and another reason to go green and market your company as an eco friend company. Meguiars, (now a major player in the waterless product category), has spent the past 5 years to launch two of the most amazing waterless products sold on the market today. Meguiars has developed their waterless program to be used as a system or a stand alone product category that truly works. Meguiars Rinse Free Express Wash D-114 And Meguiars Rinse Free Express Wash and Wax which is D-115. We have had total success with both products and both products have their place with just about any shop or mobile detailer. My thoughts about waterless are purely educational and to help support the green initiative through out the US and Many other Countries. If you never tried waterless and are interested in learning more about the waterless product category it just a phone call away.
