Does anybody notice the lack of availability of jumbo lump Maryland crabmeat this year? With an average harvest of 100 million pounds, why is it not available to retail consumers? I will tell you why. It is being exported to England, Spain, and Japan where it is a delicacy. We supply half of the worlds crabmeat. Commercial fisheries are overharvesting oysters, striped bass, and rock fish stocks from the Chesapeake Bay and relying on crabmeat more than ever to make up for it. The government blames us for the problems in the bay, yet we dont even get to enjoy what comes from it. The poultry industry, energy companies that operate hydroelectric dams along the watershed, and commercial fishermen who sell our seafood on the export market are to blame. They should be paying for restoration of the bay. You arent benefiting from it.
