Does anybody remember...white and colored water fountains at Belk-Jones? Doctors offices with folding panels separating races in the waiting room? I learned early on, that even though the lower sink/fountain at Belk-Jones was easier to use, I had to walk up the steps to the higher drinking fountain for water. I couldnt read, but I knew the shorter word white was my fountain and I would get in trouble if I used the easier fountain with the longer colored word above it. Even in the 1960s, I remember the alcove at the downtown bus station reserved for coloreds.
