Does anyone have any favourite first lines from crime novels? For me, the prize goes to Raymond Chandler for the The Long Goodbye: "The first time I laid eyes on Terry Lennox he was drunk in a Rolls Royce Silver Wraith outside the terrace of The Dancers." And in second place comes The Neon Rain by James Lee Burke: "The evening sky was streaked with purple, the colour of torn plums, and a light rain had started to fall when I came to the end of the blacktop road that cut through twenty miles of thick, almost impenetrable scrub oak and pine and stopped at the front gate of Angola penitentiary." So those are mine. What are yours?
