Does anyone remember the 1941 Preston Sturges masterpiece Sullivans Travels? Chris Rock has borrowed the idea of a successful comedic entertainer wanting to do something meaningful, which bombs, and then being shown the path to enlightenment by a dame. The result is Top Five, which is a very funny, if very profane, movie, written and directed by Rock, who also stars. Plenty of cameos by well-known rappers and standup comics, some savage commentary on the culture of celebrity, and some nice insights into the serenity of recovery as a bonus.
