Does it make sense that Assad, who is fighting a defensive civil war in an attempt to keep control over his country, would want to provoke the West and expand the hostilities by gassing a few civilians in an area that generally supports him? What does he have to gain, especially in a situation in which he seems to have the upper hand anyway? What is the emergency? Shouldn’t we wait until all the information is in before taking military action? Are we so anxious to get into a third war in the Middle East that we must rush to show that Pres. Obama’s every word is necessarily followed by fire power? And what of the “rule of law” we so often tout as the bulwark of the democracy we are trying to encourage around the world? Are Assad and the innocent civilians of Syria entitled to no less due process than the Nazi monsters in Nuremberg and Milosevic in the Hague? Have we accepted the idea that people can be summarily killed by drones if the Govt. considers them evil, that we have forgotten that trials, the right of the accused to be heard, is the foundation of the justice system?
