Does one have to fast on Thursday since the Day of Arafa falls on - TopicsExpress

Does one have to fast on Thursday since the Day of Arafa falls on Friday? We all know there is a prohibition on fasting the Day of Friday alone (without fasting a day before or a day after). The origin of this prohibition is the Hadith of the Prophet AS, Dont single out the Day of Friday by fasting, nor its night by Qiyam. But since the Day of Arafa is falling on a Friday this year, the question is, do we have to fast Thursday? Obviously, we cant fast Saturday because its the Day of Eid. Im attaching a Fatwa by the late scholar Sheikh ibn Utheimeen where he clearly states that its permissible to fast Friday without fasting Thursday. The Fatwa is in Arabic, so Ill translate the relevant part. Basically, the sheikh says that fasting Friday alone is usually Makrouh (disliked, not recommended) because of the Hadith (see above). However, if someone had a habit of fasting and that coincided with fasting on Friday, then its fine to fast on Friday. For example, if someone had a habit of fasting every other day and his/her fasting fell on Friday, then such fasting is OK (i.e. not disliked). Likewise, if ones habit was to fast the Day of Arafa and that day coincided with Friday, then its OK to just fast Friday with no other day. Allah knows best and we seek forgiveness from Him and from Him alone
