Does the Bible contradicted the Resurrection story? https://youtube/watch?v=A3qXQt6dYME Bart D. Ehrmans The Case Against the Resurrection The Following was taken from a video (above) called “The Case against the Resurrection” by Professor Bart Ehrman. Here are his arguments, and our response: EHRMAN:“Historians like a lot of sources”...’’20 would be good’’ as long as they are not from the same person...consistent with one another...Not biased toward the subject... What kind of evidence do we have when it comes to the Gospels? The Gospels are our (only) sources for knowing the Resurrection of Jesus. ANSWER: The Bible is not one, but 66 books, 66 sources: 39 Old Testament books (sources) prophesied the Messiah hundreds of years before He was born; 27 New Testament books (sources) witness and testify of Christ’s resurrection. The Bible has around 40 authors that are independent from one another and consistent with one another. EHRMAN: When where the Gospels written?...Mark 65 AD, 70 A.D., Luke or Matthew 10 or 15 years later.. John 90 A.D. (?)...40 years after the event ANSWER: How does that make History untrue? But then Professor Bart added that Paul talks about the Resurrection 20 years later, so thats better.” Well, I AGREE! EHRMAN: None of the Gospel writers were eye witness ANSWER: Actually, in the New Testament we have the following witnesses of the Resurrection: Matthew, John, James, Peter, Jude, Mark we don’t know, but his mother was! Luke wasnt an eyewitness, but he was a medical doctor and a historian. This is what he said in Luke chapter 1: 1 Many people have set out to write accounts about the events that have been fulfilled among us. 2 They used the EYEWITNESS reports circulating among us from the early disciples. 3 Having CAREFULLY INVESTIGATED everything from the beginning, I also have decided to write a CAREFUL account for you, most honorable Theophilus, 4 so you can be certain of the truth of everything you were taught. EHRMAN: We dont know who wrote these books They are anonymous whoever put that title was an editor... ANSWER: My question to Mr. Ehrman, what was the name of the editor? What is your evidence? Papias, disciple of the Apostle John (95-120 AD); Justin Martyr, a philosopher (100-165 AD); Tatian, a writer 120-180); Irenaeus, a writer (130-202 AD); Clement of Alexandria, an educated man (150-215 AD); Origen, a prolific writer (184-254 AD); Tertullian, a Lawyer (160-225 AD), and others, confirmed the authorship of the Gospels. EHRMAN: The followers of Jesus were aramean speaking peasants...lower class man who were not educated in fact Peter and John in Acts 4:13 are literally said to be illiterate. They couldnt read and write... ANSWER: That is not what that verse says! This is what the actual verse says, Acts 4:13: The members of the council were amazed when they saw the boldness of Peter and John, for they could see that they were ordinary men with no special training in the Scriptures. They also recognized them as men who had been with Jesus. There is NOTHING there saying they couldnt read nor write! EHRMAN: Where did those authors get their stories from?...they must have heard the stories from somebody, who heard these stories from somebody, who heard these stories from somebody... ANSWER: How do you know that? Any evidence? EHRMAN: They (the disciples) told stories in order to convert people. ANSWER: Really!? So they made up stories to convert people, and in the process get themselves killed!? Wow, that makes a lot of sense! This is what Peter said: (2 Peter 1:)16 For we were not making up clever stories when we told you about the powerful coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. We saw his majestic splendor WITH OUR OWN EYES 17 when he received honor and glory from God the Father. The voice from the majestic glory of God said to him, “This is my dearly loved Son, who brings me great joy.” 18 We ourselves heard that voice from heaven when we were with him on the holy mountain. Also 1 John 1:1 We proclaim to you the one who existed from the beginning, whom WE HAVE HEARD AND SEEN. WE SAW HIM with our own eyes and touched him with our own hands. EHRMAN: “(The Bible) Story changes ...simply read Marks account of Jesus death, and then read Johns account of Jesus death...’’ make a list and compare. Example: what day did Jesus die on, and at what time of the day? Mark says the day AFTER the Passover MEAL was eaten. John (19:14) says that Jesus died the day BEFORE the Passover MEAL was eaten.” ANSWER: Actually, John 19:14 DOESN’T say that Jesus died ‘the day before the Passover MEAL was eaten’. KEYWORD: MEAL! What it says is that it was ‘the day of Preparation for the Passover’. MEAL is NOT mention there. All accounts tell us that Jesus was crucified on Passover day, or The day of Preparation for Passover: Mark 15:42 “This all happened (The crucifixion and burial) on Friday, THE DAY OF PREPARATION, the day before the Sabbath. As evening approached,” Matthew 27:62 “The next day (after the crucifixion) , the one after PREPARATION DAY, the chief priests and the Pharisees went to Pilate.” Luke 23: 54 “This (the crucifixion and burial) was done late on Friday afternoon, THE DAY OF PREPARATION, as the Sabbath was about to begin.” And last but not least, John, the one that supposedly contradicted the other accounts; John 19:31 “It was THE DAY OF PREPARATION, and the Jewish leaders didn’t want the bodies hanging there the next day, which was the Sabbath (and a very special Sabbath, because it was the Passover).” EHRMAN: What about the time? According to Mark, He died at 9 in the morning; according to John He wasnt condemned to death till afternoon (John 19:14). ANSWER: Mark, Matthew and Luke were using Jewish time, while John was using Roman time. Matthew 27:1-2, Mark 15:1, Luke 22:66; 23;1 says that they took Jesus before Pilate very early in the morning.” John 19:14 says that it was about noon (Roman time), or THE SIXTH HOUR which is the equivalent of 6 a.m IN THE MORNING!. In other words, there are no contradictions. There are no discrepancies. EHRMAN: “Did Jesus carry the cross the entire way himself, or did Simon of Cyrene carry it? it depends what gospel you read John 19:17 vs. Mark 15:21, Mat. 27:32 Luke 23:26. ANSWER: All Gospel accounts tell us that Jesus carried the cross himself. Three of them added the detail that at some point Simon of Cyrene was forced to carry the cross for Jesus. John didn’t have to be redundant and repeat a detail that 3 writers already tolds us about. EHRMAN: Did both robbers mocked Jesus, or did only one mocked Him, and the other came to his defense?” Mark 15:29-32, Matthew 27:39-44 vs. Luke 23:40-43. ANSWER: Quick answer: both mock him, but one repented! EHRMAN: Did the curtain in the temple rip in half before He died or after He died?” Luke 23:45-46 vs. Mark 15:37-38; Matthew 27:50-53. ANSWER:The curtain in the temple rip in half as Jesus released His spirit. Matthew 27:50 says Then Jesus shouted out again, and he released his spirit. 51 AT THAT MOMENT the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. Mark 15:37 Then Jesus uttered another loud cry and breathed his last. 38 AND the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. Luke 23:44 says By this time it was about noon, and darkness fell across the whole land until three o’clock. 45 The light from the sun was gone. And suddenly, the curtain in the sanctuary of the Temple was torn down the middle. 46 THEN Jesus shouted, “Father, I entrust my spirit into your hands! And with those words he breathed his last. answersingenesis.org/articles/2011/10/11/contradictions-temple-veil-torn-in-two Again, NO CONTRADICTIONS! EHRMAN:Who went to the tomb...Mary alone, or Mary with other women? If with other women, how many, which ones, and what were their names? John 20:1 vs. Mark 16:1;Matthew 28:1; Luke 24:1. ANSWER: Who went to the tomb? Mary Magdalene with several women. How many? We dont know because exact numbers were not given. Some of the women are mention by name, some are not. Mary Magdalene is always mentioned first, because she is the one who is relevant to the story; She was the first person Jesus appeared to, after He was risen. Mark 16: 9 says After Jesus rose from the dead early on Sunday morning, the first person who saw him was Mary Magdalene... EHRMAN: Was the stone rolled away before they got there or not? Mark 16:4; Luke 24:2; John 20:1 vs. Matthew 28:2. ANSWER: All those verses say that the stone was rolled away before they got there; i dont even know why Mr. Ehrman is asking the question! NO CONTRADICTION! EHRMAN: What did they see in the tomb: one man, two men, or one angel? Mark 16:5; Luke 24:4 vs. Matthew 28:2. ANSWER: Two angels in human form. EHRMAN: What were they told to tell the disciples? Were the disciples supposed to stay in Jerusalem to see Jesus or to go to Galilee? Luke 24:49; Mark 16:7; Matthew 28:7. ANSWER: Mark 16:7 and Matthew 28:7 are instructions for the one event, while Luke 24:49 are instructions for another. In Mark 16:7 and Matthew 28:7, the women were told (by the angels) to tell the disciples to meet Jesus RISEN in Galilee. Luke 24:49 have nothing to do with angels giving instructions to the women! Luke 24:49 happened AFTER the disciples have met Jesus risen in Galilee. Jesus, not the angels (nor the women) is the one giving the disciples NEW instructions: To wait in Jerusalem for the the Holy Spirit! EHRMAN:Did the women tell anyone what they saw or not? Matthew 28:8; Luke 24:9; John 20:18 vs. Mark 16:8. ANSWER: Mark 16:8 says: The women fled from the tomb, trembling and bewildered, and they said nothing to anyone because they were too frightened. BUT THE VERY NEXT VERSE SAYS:Then they briefly reported all this to Peter and his companions. Yes, they INITIALLY said nothing to anyone because they were too frightened; BUT THEN they briefly reported all this to Peter and his companions. EHRMAN: Did the disciples never leave Jerusalem or did they immediately leave and go to Galilee? Luke 24:49-53; Acts 1:4 vs. Matthew 28:16. ANSWER: Luke 24:49-53; Acts 1:4 vs. Matthew 28:16 are 2 different events: In Matthew 28:16 Jesus met his disciples in Galilee after he was risen from death. Matthew story stops there. Luke 24 is the continuation of that story, where Jesus LATER meets them in Jerusalem and then He ascended to Heaven. CONCLUSION: The Bible is not one book, or source, but 66 sources. The New Testament hasnt 20, but 27 books or sources with different authors, independent from one another. Most of the New Testament authors were eyewitnesses of the Resurrection of Christ. We have early historic sources confirming the authorship of the Gospels. We also have more manuscripts copies at an earlier time, than we do from Plato, Ceasar, Tacitus, Aristotle, and others. The Gospel authors gave us different details from one another, that in return give us a more complete detailed picture of the life, death and Resurrection of Christ. It is absurd to call those details “contradictions’’ or “discrepancies”, like it would be absurd to say that all 4 Mr. Ehrman biographical sources (above) contradicted each other, just because one says one thing, and the other says another.
