Does the Green Space Matter to you? City Council 8/14, 4:00 - TopicsExpress

Does the Green Space Matter to you? City Council 8/14, 4:00 PM Mayor and Members of the Council, My wife and I live on Escondido Country Club and have been members since 1990. We have seen the golf course purchased and run several times by various individuals. Escondido Country Club was a profitable golf course when it was owned by the LaJolla Development Group. That group took the profits from the golf course and didn’t make the required improvements or required maintenance of the golf course or buildings. It was a profitable golf course even though it was so poorly managed and could be profitable again with the proper management. That management team basically told the existing members “If you don’t like the condition of the course or the way we are managing it, you can leave” - many members did leave because this attitude was very rude and the golf course wasn’t maintained properly. We purchased our existing home and moved from Scripps Ranch in 1999 because we enjoyed Escondido Country Club and the neighborhoods open space. We invested more than we paid for the house in remodels and landscaping because it was on the golf course. We were told that the golf course was a mandatory green space because the original builder was allowed to build more homes on smaller lots around Golden Circle and others. If Stuck In The Rough’s (Mr. Schlesinger’s) proposed subdivision is approved our lives and many of our friends who live in the neighborhood (plus most of Escondido) will be turned upside down because our neighborhood can’t handle the additional traffic – the congestion will be like living in LA. I’m not sure our existing infrastructure could handle more homes – our existing schools are overcrowded, existing narrow streets, sewer system, water supply and police/fire services are already at capacity with the existing homes. The quality of life for us and our neighbors would be severely impacted. The proposed development would also harm the environment, destroy existing old trees, kill wildlife that lives on the golf course and destroy the open space that has been here for almost 50 years. As you know, ECCHO has collected a record number of signatures from the citizens of Escondido for an initiative to keep Escondido Country Club an open green space. This was accomplished utilizing a totally voluntary support team of hundreds of Escondido citizens. The citizens of Escondido have spoken by signing this initiative, the signatures have been confirmed and the initiative will be submitted to you at a later date. We urge you to adopt the initiative and immediately designate the Escondido Country Club as an open space, do not make all the citizens who signed the initiative and those who did not have an opportunity to sign wait for a general election in 2014 to vote on this issue because they have already spoken and the results will be the same. Please take the correct action for the citizens of Escondido by enacting this initiative. Thank you, Ron Brezic
