Does the Northern Soul Keep the Faith fist belong to anyone as a trademark? someone wants to own that symbol - should it belong to one person - Heres what Bru Newhall sent to me this weekend ... Are you passionate about Northern Soul? The Retro Bag Shop Manchester is trying to register a trade mark for the Northern Soul/ Keep the Faith, clenched fist logo. If successful they will own the logo. I have filed an opposition with the Intellectual Property Office (IPO) to try to prevent the logo being registered. If, like me, you feel that the logo should not belong to one company as it means so much to the Northern Soul scene and has been in common use since the early 1970s are you prepared to spend a little time to help stop the trade mark application. My trade mark attorney advises that you can file an Observation with the IPO. This would mean sending a letter to the IPO (by mail, fax or email). The observation needs to say how long you have viewed the logo to indicate an affiliation to Northern Soul, if you have used the logo, or been aware of its use, for advertising Northern Soul. Have you been to gigs our all-nighters that have used the logo in the advertising and finally as to why you feel the IPO should not accept the logo as a trade mark. I know is asking for your time but it will really help in hopefully preventing the trade mark being approved.
